DESCRIPTION

Redevelopment of former railway freight land in the West of Ireland.

The new 5.6 ha urban quarter, equal in area to the historic centre of Galway, was designed as a gateway to this westmost Irish city. Its architectural language referred to the image of the iconic Irish landscape – ‘burren’ – with residential buildings standing on the limestone plinths of the retail, cut with the canyons of streets and squares. The scheme comprised a multi-modal terminus train/ bus station, a 17-storey hotel, school of music, over 200 apartments, retail, offices and other public buildings. It involved adaptation and conservation of multiple listed structures. The multidisciplinary consultants’ team prepared an extensive environmental impact assessment and a SEVESO study, performed a wind-tunneling test and modelled the flows of passengers. Extensive public consultations were carried out.

Alexander Rakita was the project leader in MOLA (Dublin).
