Area: 200 sq. m. Client: Private Architect & Interior Designer: AR Architecture Sector: Residential
Location: Hampstead, London, NW3, UK Thinking about something similar? Refurbishment and extension of a ground floor flat in North-West London The client asked us to completely re-arrange the layout of this 3-bedroom period property in a conservation area, with high ceilings and unrestricted private access to a large garden, to match the needs of his extended family, adding a full-width rear extension with large glazed openings to the garden and a roof terrace to be used by the first floor flat. Acting as both Architects and Interior designers, we created a large (over 60 sqm) open-plan living-dining space alongside four bedrooms (two of them en-suite) arranged around the entrance hall, making the garden seen from the front door to the flat. We also designed a light-filled timber-clad pavilion at the end of the garden, to be used as a study and children’s playroom, or, occasionally, a guest bedroom. At the same time, the other house in the semi-detached pair was undergoing full redevelopment, with a new rear extension featuring traditionally-styled arched openings and a pitched roof. The council initially insisted on full symmetry between the two extensions; however, we successfully negotiated a much more contemporary appearance for our client’s side.
